ABSTRACT

In this introduction to the Dance Studies Part, DeFrantz provides an orientation to this relatively new field, with foundations in historical, theoretical, and practical methods. As a gathering notion for dance research within the humanities, DeFrantz argues, it accommodates critical race theory, feminist theory, and queer theory, and enables inquiries beyond practice, pedagogy, and performance. The introduction gives an overview of chapters by Bench, Candelario, Perillo, and Rosa; Höfling; Park; and Stewart. It offers insights on current practices in dance studies and highlights trends for the future.
