ABSTRACT

How ethnography advances understandings of dance education are central questions addressed in this chapter. Drawing from anecdotes from the Pacific continent to West Africa to the United States, I explore how the methodology has provided me an opportunity to immerse myself in distinct BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color) dance worldviews. These experiences have evolved definitions of dance, curriculum, and dance pedagogy. I share portraits of my research journeys to provide commentary about research ethics, data collection, analysis, and more. Ethnography guided by global, decolonial, and somatic aspirations for reinvigorating practices of dance and dance education is explained.
