ABSTRACT

This chapter defines teacher self-study as a methodology for dance educators seeking to understand and improve their practice and their students’ learning. Included is a personal case study of the author’s use of self-study research in her work teaching dance to detained youth in a correctional facility. The chapter details how one can identify the need to employ teacher self-study; possible self-study methods and approaches are described, and important limitations and ethical considerations are discussed. This chapter serves as an introduction to this methodological approach while highlighting the ways in which the implementation of this methodology uniquely aligns with the skills and approaches dance educators have developed in their personal dancemaking practice.
