ABSTRACT

In this section introduction, Wilson narrates the historical roots of dance science as emerging out of the field of dance medicine. Originally focusing on injury prevention and physical training, this line of practice and inquiry has expanded to a variety of academic and professional organizations that study and promote dancer wellness. Alongside this historical trend was the development of kinesiologic and somatic-based dance pedagogies that prioritize the esthetic and experiential aspects of human movement. These trends have come together to suggest more holistic approaches to the scientific study of dance. After summarizing the four chapters in this section, Wilson suggests that the future of dance science research will honor its historical foundations while integrating more collaborative, situated, and reflective approaches to research design.
