ABSTRACT

Dance/movement therapy (DMT) research generally focuses on exploring the effectiveness of its integrated body–mind interventions for ethical and accountable use with various clinical populations. As a practice that utilizes the body and dance, the foundational principles of DMT can be applied systematically in a research setting “to know” what words cannot express. This chapter describes the developmental process of a systematized approach to applying the skills of DMT to analyze interviews and outlines its steps. Grounded in an interpretive phenomenological, arts-based methodology, the DMT approach to analyzing interviews invites researchers to show up with a critical cultural consciousness, step outside of their familiar comfort zones, and to engage in a dynamic, intercorporeal, relational “dance” with research participants that spans time and space for deeper, varied reflection.
