ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the inquiry process for a research project that involves multiple disciplinary spheres and multiple phases over a 16-year time period. I continue to be invested in this spectrum of inquiry as a researcher/practitioner. This spectrum encompasses multiple threads of inquiry, emerging from a central phenomenon of experience and practice. In the writing, I trace the thought processes and analytic strategies involved in moving from an initial observation impetus to a robust research framework. I also address practical aspects and challenges within the process, from navigating different disciplinary domains to funding.

The research ultimately examines human mobility device design through the lenses of dance and disability. In so doing, it expands the creative landscape in design thinking through attending to the disabled dancing body while carving an innovative space for dialogic intersections between the fields of dance, disability, and assistive technology design.
