ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I discuss how I have come to position dance-movement within the activity of research, drawing experiences working in interdisciplinary collaborative projects with colleagues such as architects, engineers, musicians, and designers. I suggest these experiences have led me to feel subject matter is less important than an ontological framework, which in turn indicates how important it is for dance-based researchers to articulate their ontological position beyond just identifying as a dancer. I discuss how placing dance-movement as a kind of method in my research design allows me to delve into defining my methodological and ontological positions that illuminate how I see dance as contributing to meaning-making and knowledge production.
