ABSTRACT

This study draws on social semiotic approaches to multimodality as well as gender/queer theories to analyse the representations of the title character from Julián Is a Mermaid. Using qualitative multimodal content analysis, the researchers consider the multimodal structures utilised in the picture book. Findings demonstrate that the visual and textual resources display gender expression and performance, provide inconsistent representations of gender identity and expression, surround the character in a feminine context, and promote a message of acceptance. The book simultaneously challenges gender stereotypes for young men and offers problematic representations of transgender individuals.
