ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an overview of current research, practices, and legal considerations for interviewing vulnerable suspects, incorporating guidelines regarding the identification of vulnerabilities, engaging with third parties in the interview, and training and supervision. It addresses the general considerations with respect to vulnerability and provides a foundation from which to consider the impact of specific vulnerabilities The book discusses the concept of vulnerability, and highlights the need to consider the extent to which a person is vulnerable by virtue of their contact with the criminal justice system, in addition to any specific vulnerabilities that may be relevant to them. It discusses interviewing intoxicated suspects, including alcohol and other drugs, recognising the impact of prescription drug use on interviews.
