ABSTRACT

Deaf people are part of a minority community with their own language, history, and customs. As such, they may experience a multitude of vulnerabilities during a police interview. Given the essential role of language throughout the custodial process, it is pertinent that d/Deaf suspects are able to communicate effectively. This means they might need to use their hands to sign, and they may also require an interpreter. This chapter will examine d/Deafness as a vulnerability, police experience with d/Deaf suspects, and will provide a case study and considerations for interview guidelines.
