ABSTRACT

How do you teach about the Holocaust and genocide and use these histories as tools to understand human rights and democracy in a country still recovering from the legacy of Apartheid? Is it possible to make connections between the Holocaust and current issues in South Africa, such as xenophobia? Is it beneficial to use another country’s history to understand South Africa’s own reality and will it help to build its future? This chapter looks at the opportunities and challenges that Holocaust and genocide education offers in South Africa, through the teachings of the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre.
