ABSTRACT

I have a secret I’m dying to share. But I dare not now. I know she’s here. With me. The darkness is yielding, and I feel her. Near. I search the space around me. Last night an eel, a silent green monster three times my size, swam slowly through the center of the stream, trying to sense my breathing and my movement. My burrow is now no longer safe. Where eels hunt in the stream, snakes follow along the banks, listening for retreating splashes. Before long I will be given up. It’s time to move. I look down at the stream, but I can’t hear or see her. Just stillness, silence, and the cool, dark water waiting for the light and the birds.
