ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the cultural-religious Islamic life in Jerusalem on the eve of the Frankish occupation of the city. Cultural-religious Islamic life refers to the activity of Muslim ʿUlamāʾ and their contribution to the cultural-religious sphere in Jerusalem, as well as educational centers and their location in the city. And we try in this chapter to answer the questions that persons interested in cultural-religious life in this period could pose and particularly focus on the activity of Jerusalemite religious scholars [al-ʿUlamāʾ al-Maqādisa] or those who visited the city and stayed in it until the eve of the Frankish occupation of Jerusalem. These questions include: where are the education and learning centers located in the city? What are the names, nature, and sciences taught in these centers? What happened to the ʿUlamāʾ from Jerusalem or those who visited the city on the eve of the occupation and conquest day? Where did the ʿUlamāʾ go, and what were their contributions and role in the cities that they migrated to?
