ABSTRACT

This chapter is an excerpt from Indira Goswami’s Datal Hatir Uye Khowa Howdah, translated into English by Dibyajyoti Sarma. In the month of Jeth, the backyard of the houses of the Sattra is dazzling with the blooming laburnum trees. The return of Giribala, Indranath’s youngest sister, is shown here. A covered bullock cart is sent, which has gone to fetch Giribala, who was married off to Boranga. She lost her husband and has returned. The tinkling of the cowbells announced the arrival. So did a crowd of children and women who started screaming and shouting behind the wagon. The plight of women in a brahminical society is shown by Indira Goswami here with an unmatched poignancy and evocative use of symbols.
