ABSTRACT

Early in the Metaphysics, Aristotle explains the origin of philosophy as follows:

It is owing to their wondering that people both now begin and at first began to philosophize, wondering at the beginning about the difficulties at hand, then advancing little by little and puzzling over the greater matters, for example, about the properties of the Moon (περί τε τῶν τῆς σε λήνης παθημάτων) and those of the Sun and stars, and about the genesis of the universe.
