ABSTRACT

The concept of security in Europe has been shaped by a series of contesting ideas and evolved in response to the drivers of European integration and changes in the broader regional and global environment. To sketch the contours and construction of the European security architecture, it requires us to be sensitive to the evolution in the concept of security and the dominant narratives at different junctures of European developments.

This paper thus begins with a quick overview of the different concepts of security. It then briefly describes the main steps taken to construct the European security architecture and its evolution in response to the changes. The paper concludes with some thoughts on the challenges faced by the EU and NATO in this particularly turbulent time in Europe.
