ABSTRACT

The rise of emerging economies in the wake of globalisation has become a driving force for the transformation of the international political and economic system, an important aspect of which is the evolution of the BRICS co-operation mechanism. Although China did not establish the BRICS co-operation mechanism, its establishment and development are in line with China's strategic interests. A major focus of Chinese diplomacy has been strengthening relations with developing countries and the BRICS mechanism will help realise this. After the establishment of the BRICS mechanism, China’s relations with BRICS members have made great progress both in political and economic terms. However, the relationship between China and India is still an obstacle to co-operation among BRICS countries.
