ABSTRACT

Desert Voicebox, located in the Saharawi Refugee camps in south-west Algeria, is an after-school education project that teaches English and music (both international and Saharawi) at primary school level where students can obtain music diplomas certified by the London College of Music. Led by UK-based Sandblast charity, since 2016, the Desert Voicebox after-school programme practises a diversity of creative teaching methods, offering educational opportunities for the children to develop their autonomy, broaden aspirations, and acquire skills to strengthen their individual and collective voices creatively, culturally, and politically. The project prioritises training and employing Saharawi women to teach the programme, offering opportunities for them to develop careers locally and help reduce overall aid dependency.
