ABSTRACT

Scotland has a long history of being associated with football management and producing great football managers. A factor which has contributed to this relationship with football management is the Scottish Football Association's (SFA) reputation for coach education for aspiring coaches and managers, especially at the Professional Licence (Pro Licence) level. This chapter offers an overarching review of empirical research, conducted with one of the Pro Licence cohorts, and our practical experience of engagement with multiple cohorts over the last 15 years. The chapter explores aspects of career planning, educational development, and leadership in the context of elite-level coaching and football management. It concludes with ‘lessons learned’ where we offer our observations to national associations, football clubs, in addition to current and aspirant managers.
