ABSTRACT

In this paper the author addresses “rules of thumb” for clinical practice within the discipline James Hillman called “archetypal psychology.” These rules include attitudes such as “any idea can be used defensively and will”; the danger of “sacred cows”; the importance of thinking poetically; the “connatural”; symbols “with” rather than symbols “of”; sticking to the image whatever image is; the importance of framing, observer and observed; contrasts; stealing tools; daimones and demons; true vs truth; Layard’s rule with dream work.
