ABSTRACT

Summary: The traditional difference between I and me, they and them has been breaking down for hundreds of years. In subject complement position, the difference has become one of formality or prestige. In the construction illustrated by She is prettier than I/me, there is partly a difference of dialect and partly a difference in prestige. But when the pronouns are coordinated, things become really difficult. The use of (s)he and I is on the way to being the prestige form under all grammatical conditions. This means that there are at least two systems operating simultaneously in modern English, but based of different principles. This chapter also raises the question of whether the in-coming system can be said still to be a matter of case.
