ABSTRACT

Summary. Countability, a grammatical feature marked largely in determiners and quantifiers, based on whether we can count things (as in three books) or cannot (as in *three knowledges), appears to be slightly unstable in English. The loss of fewer in favour of less receives much prescriptive comment; the use of amount with countables seems to pass unnoticed. While these two may be symptomatic, they do not crucially affect the system. There are marginal usages, largely in spoken language, however, which suggest that change may be more radical.
