ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces methods and techniques to address issues of cognitive and behavioural health with older adults with physical and cognitive difficulties participating in art therapy sessions. It examines differences in facilitating in-person and online sessions with this population and provides examples of effective interventions and techniques used in virtual art therapy sessions. Including caregivers as partners in online sessions proved essential to the successful engagement of older adult participants. Caregivers were present to troubleshoot technical issues, set up materials and media, refocus participants as needed, and participate themselves. Engaging in client–caregiver pairs allowed older adult participants opportunities to experience sessions more fully while caregivers shared non-verbal expressive experiences with their loved one.
