ABSTRACT

The six overarching themes that emerged from the research presented in this chapter provide insights into how art therapists have adapted their practices to suit online formats during the COVID-19 pandemic. Navigating the virtual therapeutic space theme highlights some of the key differences between conducting tele art therapy and providing art therapy face-to-face. Secondly, accessibility/inaccessibility indicates that offering virtual art therapy makes services more accessible to some clients and presents barriers to others. Through the theme of coping with teletherapy challenges unique to the art therapy profession, research participants reveal the ways that they have overcome obstacles when practicing online. Reconceptualizing materials suggests that online art therapists are thinking about materials. Lastly, the theme client–therapist power differentials and cultural competence demonstrates the ways that cultural differences and power differentials manifest within the virtual therapeutic space.
