ABSTRACT

During the COVID pandemic, many art therapists adapted their framework to work across the virtual landscape. In this context, this chapter discusses both non-digital art media and digital platforms, how to meet a variety of child and adolescent developmental, emotional, and social concerns; and how to include parents/caregivers and siblings. At the core, the author’s art therapy practice has undergone a radical transformation in learning how to engage children, adolescents, and families/caregivers in the ‘magical circle’ as discussed by Daniel-Wariya, in play when employing telecommunication tools. Although challenges persist, after more than a year of providing therapy through telecommunication tools, it is Snyder’s view that art therapy has the potential to work across a developmental continuum in teletherapy formats. Importantly, the benefit of being able to provide continuity of care through extenuating circumstances has been critical during this time, making digital teletherapy worthwhile, as shown in the case vignettes presented in this chapter.
