ABSTRACT
Swift may have begun writing the new pamphlet to neutralize the effect of Carteret’s coming. But I think he soon added other reasons, some of them subtle enough. Supporters of the ministry were inventing quite false grounds to revile the alliance against the patent, and Swift wished to expose these lies. He hoped as well to hamstring any leader who advised that the English government would recall the patent without further pressure. Still other motives will soon appear.
