ABSTRACT

It looks as if Swift left Dublin on 9 April 1727. As soon as he landed in England, he struck the elegaic note which was to cling to his travels this year. From Chester he went to Herefordshire, where he visited the old family house in Goodrich and his grandfather’s church. 1 Here he presented to the church a chalice used by the Rev. Thomas Swift, with inscriptions dated 1726; these identified himself as the donor and described his grandfather as ‘notus in historiis ob ea quae fecit et passus est pro Carolo Primo’. 2
