T he Legion Club was the last important work written by Swift. But during his seventh decade he busied himself at times with two long compositions that had been on his hands for many years: Polite Conversation and Directions to Servants. It is not quite clear when he first began to write either of these, and he left the latter seriously incomplete. 1
