ABSTRACT

The Department of Statistics Malaysia reported that today, Malaysia’s population is estimated at 32.6 million, increased from 32.4 million in 2018. Malaysia has always been viewed as one of the most stable countries in Southeast Asia, having had uninterrupted democratic elections since independence. In the month of October 2019 itself, Malaysia is contending with the resurgence of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Malaysia. Islamic militancy in Malaysia is not a new phenomenon. While Malaysia has never experienced internal armed conflict, which is usually the precursor for nearly all violent militancy experienced by neighbouring countries, there have been a substantial number of militant groups recorded in Malaysia. In 2019, the media reported that to that date Malaysia arrested a total of 249 local and foreign individuals suspected of recruiting members for terrorism through social media.
