ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how mechanical puppets perform in the rituals of Shinto festivals. It traces the history of how karakuri ningyō have performed on dashi (floats) and describes the types of performances. Following a brief account of Shinto and the importance of kami (god or spirit) worship, the authors explain the role of karakuri ningyō in Shinto rituals at festivals. The festivals of two cities are the focus: the Kamezaki Ebb Tide Festival and the Takayama Spring and Fall Festivals, with detailed descriptions of specific performances. The chapter demonstrates how the karakuri ningyō, dashi, and performances are offerings for the kami and how the communal and creative effort of the people contribute to this devotion.
