ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book considers some of the possible future trends in metacognition research. It focuses on the role that metacognition plays in mind wandering and mindfulness particularly in relation to creativity. The book explores the concept of mindfulness as a form of metacognition and its link with improving metacognitive skills. It demonstrates how students adapt their learning strategies in a homework task depending on the task requirements and how their knowledge and use of metacognitive skills impacts on the academic outcome. The book also focuses on academic outcomes from the adaptation of metacognitive skills which focuses on problem solving in mathematics. It draws on the foundational theories of metacognition to suggest some new areas for research that speak to the changing world we find ourselves in.
