ABSTRACT

Mindfulness is defined as paying attention intentionally and nonjudgmentally in the present moment to the ongoing experience. Research on the effectiveness of mindfulness training found that it is the promising intervention that positively influences a broad spectrum of human functioning. Positive effects of mindfulness training were also found in the education context. Mindfulness-based interventions improve teachers’ and students’ well-being, emotion regulation, self-control, and resiliency, among others. The first aim of this chapter is to briefly review the effects of mindfulness-related interventions implemented in schools and to show their significance in promoting “soft abilities” that enhance the process of learning. The second goal is to define mindfulness as a metacognitive phenomenon and postulate the effects of a mindfulness intervention on improving metacognitive skills important in the learning process.
