ABSTRACT

Silence is not just the passive absence of sound. Silence has to be actively produced and constructed. One pertinent example is of course the blocking of outdoor sound by special windows. Another would be the use of earplugs. These technologies were developed because the omnipresence of noise is often disturbing, even causing sicknesses. Producing silence can therefore be a form of sonic well-being. The paper especially addresses noise-cancelling-headphones.
