ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and outlines the book which offers a broad playfield for resilience as a therapeutic tool prior to, during and after a challenging situation. The chapter provides a brief history of studies of resilience, and argues for contextualization of resilience as it may look different for various persons and groups of individuals, and at different moments. This is the message Hélène Campbell, a double lung transplant survivor, shares in her testimony; a message also echoed in many other personal and professional testimonials shared by the authors throughout the book. Whether you are anticipating hardship, going through it, or recovering from it, this chapter and many others presented in this book discuss resources for the betterment of mental health.
