ABSTRACT

The loss of a loved one is a life-changing adversity. This chapter seeks to discuss resilience as a process for widow(ers). Resilience factors, individual and contextual, provide the ground for much-needed coping strategies for survivors during the bereavement process. This chapter presents the most salient factors around resilience in the process of marital mourning available in the current scientific literature. Considering that resilience is relevant to a successful adaptation at a particular time, keeping a balance between vulnerability and access to resilience factors is essential. It is dependent on the ability to navigate the context risk factors and protective factors. Resiliency can be a fluid concept and resilient individuals can also experience struggles and pain. This chapter provides both clinical and self-help information on how resilient widow(er)s cope.
