ABSTRACT

Although racism and discrimination exist against many ethnic, racial and religious groups across the world and throughout history, the struggle in the Black community has its own unique history of generational oppression in North America. In the summer of 2020, the outcry against racism began to make headlines across the world as protests and riots flooded the streets exposing police brutality against the Black community in the United States. These protests drew attention to a long-standing issue and beg the question of how the Black community can overcome such heavy adversity. But since overcoming adversity can be a complex journey and many factors can contribute to this goal, this chapter will specifically explore how one tool in particular has most recently fostered resilience: social media. Because social media has given its users the power to change narratives, it can be seen as a tool for collective resilience, enabling a community to have a voice, to change and reappropriate its own narrative as well as build up a positive sense of connectivity and collective identity.
