ABSTRACT

This chapter lobbies to create multi-vocal art histories, created within specific locations and cultures, which together present a more nuanced and textured account of dynamic and transformational art. Firstly I offer my version of Māori art history with its key facets; then I examine how these ideas are being applied to a current research project focused on adornment; and lastly, I reflect on the potential of this kind of thinking to shape the discipline moving forward.
