ABSTRACT

Éire’s domestic propaganda policy has been neglected in the country’s history of the Second World War. Studies of propaganda in Ireland during the conflict have largely focused on external efforts to influence government policy and public opinion. This chapter addresses this gap by investigating how the Irish Government Information Bureau (GIB) helped to promote the concept of neutrality to the Irish people both during and after the “Emergency”, also reinforcing the political legitimacy of the Irish government in the process. Using a broad range of primary sources, this chapter explores the Irish government machinery created to manage and promote policies that actively shaped the public opinion within its borders.
