ABSTRACT

Equine-assisted psychotherapy and learning is an effective therapeutic modality for working with children. Much like toys in play therapy, horses in equine-assisted therapy can draw out resolutions to a child’s problems resulting in increased coping skills and improved self-esteem. This chapter will explain the benefits of using horses with children in therapy. The research reflects positive therapeutic results that stem from the presence of horses. The comparison of the principles of play therapy and equine-assisted therapy is outlined. In addition, a case study is included to illustrate the outcomes of six sessions with a child using equine-assisted psychotherapy and learning.
