ABSTRACT

The children’s book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein and first published in 1964 can be used when exploring environmental considerations. One metaphor of the book utilized is that the boy used almost of all the resources of the tree. The client and therapist could do this together exploring metaphors of both growth and gifts from nature. Fairy figures or other objects can also be added as a type of small fairy garden. The client can then take this teacup garden with them as a living and growing reminder of their nature-based therapy sessions and experiences. The gifts from nature can also be used following an activity in a gratitude ritual. For example, after completing a nature mandala, the items can be placed back in a similar area where they were originally found. Another option is to make a gratitude alter in which to place the nature items.
