ABSTRACT

This case study describes how Virginia Beach Public Schools (VBCPS) adopted a holistic, divisionwide approach to sustainability. Told from the perspective of the division’s Sustainability Officer, readers will learn how VBCPS started its sustainability journey by building to LEED standards and then expanded its efforts to integrate sustainable practices across all areas, from building operations to curriculum. They will also be introduced to the concept of the triple bottom line of sustainability and learn how this concept is guiding the division’s sustainability efforts in three key areas – building assets, transportation, and food.
