ABSTRACT

This case study describes how Common Ground High School is creating a model for urban place-based education that is both culturally relevant and student-centered. Readers will learn how school leaders engaged the school community in developing a four-year progression of authentic learning experiences that, while rooted in core academics, allow students to follow their passions and interests. They will also be introduced to some of the experiences and programs that students engage in over the course of their time at Common Ground and gain insight into lessons learned by school leaders as they worked to build a school that was responsive and relevant to their students and rooted in the city they call home.
