ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how to create an optimal motivational climate for athletic development. It considers the impact coaches can have on motivational climate and focus on how coach leadership can promote an effective motivational climate. The chapter explores theoretical ideas concerning what determines our motivation. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is a general theory of motivation designed to further our understanding of the determinants of human action and psychological functioning. Achievement Goal Theory (AGT) is a theory that shares similar ideas and premises with SDT and is also a popular way of understanding motivational climates. The fundamental premise of AGT is that individuals are motivated to demonstrate competence. The more ego-involved the performer, the more anxiety they experienced, but only if they reported low perceived ability. Creating change in individuals may best be achieved by changing the situations or environments they operate in.
