ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some of the judgements that are required to arrive at an appropriate understanding of athletic development. The chapter explains how distinct athletic development perspective is informed by a range of ideas from psychology. Development implies a focus on learning and developmental processes and relationships that help athletes transform any potential they have into healthy, resilient, and sustainable participation. Development also involves enhancing physical, social, and psychological skills. Adult cases highlight that athletic development is not neat linear progression from childhood and people follow varied routes. The case studies highlight how complex athletic development is and people must not assume it refers to a path that starts in childhood and therefore may be confused with talent development. The mental catalysts in the framework refer to an individual’s psychosocial attitudes, behaviours, and skills that support their development. Wellbeing is an important consideration when examining athletic development.
