ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the argument made by the book and points to implications. We wanted to find a way to reconfigure social sciences and humanities research into mental healthcare so that it better reflects the lived experience of those involved. Turning away from Foucauldian assumptions and focussing on the institutional setting seems to be a way of doing this. The empirical chapters each stress the power of institutional forms on mental healthcare. There appears to be a mismatch between what we know about accountable bureaucracies and what we want from mental healthcare. The solution might be to separate out the components of care, such that not all are located within an accountable bureaucracy.
