ABSTRACT

The importance of play as the foundation for learning and development in early childhood and beyond is well established. There are ongoing concerns regarding the lack of time and opportunity children have to participate in play, partner this with the increased access to technology and sedentary behaviour, it is crucial that play remains high on the education agenda. This chapter explores play in a historical context and introduces the reader to links between animal and human play behaviour. A range of current and contemporary theoretical perspectives associated with play and learning are discussed. The role of the adult in children’s play is examined; this supports the reader to engage in reflection on own practice, using scenarios and points for consideration throughout the chapter.
