ABSTRACT

Physical development is one of the prime areas in the Early Years Foundation Stage (Tickell, 2011). However, the recent Covid-19 pandemic has led to a reduction in children’s physical activity rates. The need for practitioners with a knowledge of how children develop physically and the importance of movement and activity for developing key skills has never been greater. However, many students often comment that it is an area they feel less confident in.

This chapter aims to provide students with information around children’s physical development, with links to theory, research and key government documents. Sections on the importance of fundamental movement skills and physical literacy will explore the role of confidence and motivation. This chapter will encourage students to reflect on their practice and attitudes to physical activity, develop a clear understanding of how children acquire key skills and recognise the importance of these to later learning, enabling them to better support the holistic development of children in their settings.
