Information processing differences in the early years: dyslexia

This chapter shows that traditionally conditions such as dyslexia have not been associated with early years and that there is a misapprehension that information processing differences, such as dyslexia being only about reading, and as the babies in the nursery do not read it is unimportant to nursery staff. The chapter discusses the new research and advanced brain scanning technology that potentially could make it possible to identify these conditions at a very early age and to be able to put in support before children start to fail in education, thereby destroying their self-esteem and life chances. This chapter suggests that early years workers could be trained to look for a range of conditions that may indicate children at risk of an information processing difference at a very early stage and allow them to be seen as differences rather than disabilities.
