ABSTRACT

Observation

This chapter considers the purposes of observation, including peer observation, and how this supports improvements to practice in the setting and aligns with the inspection process. It examines several different methods of observation and how and when these might be carried out including using digital technologies. The chapter promotes a reflective approach to observation by drawing on authentic examples from practice and by encouraging the reader to consider the child’s perspective throughout. It explores a range of ethical dilemmas and argues that there has never been a more critical time for observation to identify and support children’s needs post-pandemic.
