Mentoring, coaching and supervision

This chapter considers the purposes of mentoring, coaching and supervision, particularly their contribution to continuous professional development and quality improvement in the setting. It draws on examples from practice to examine different approaches to mentoring, coaching and supervision and considers the key conditions required for an effective and ethical approach. Finally, the chapter argues for approaches to mentoring, coaching and supervision to be rooted in a model of professionalism, which emphasises collegiality, collective responsibility and is built upon a strong ethic of care and respectful relationships with each other, children and families.
